Tonight I went to install new software, Power DVD. While installing an error message came up, I canceled out of it and then went to try it again. When I did, my D:, E: and F: drives were ALL GONE!

When I go into Device Manager, all 3 have yellow ! and this is the error info:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

This is what is says for all 3.

I have deleted the drives, I've tried to do a system restore from MSCONFIG and it refuses to go back. I've tried to install new drivers and it tells me that the ones I have are working and there is no need to update them.

Nothing I do seems to bring them back.

So I thought I might have to reformat the hard drive, but everything I read about XP is just flop the CD in and run it from there. WELL, I can't do that because I have NO CD ROM/ DVD ROM etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Been over 6 hours now trying everything and I am so tired and need another brain on what to try or do

Well, it would have been really helpful to know what O/S you're running, makes guessing a lot easier.

I've had an issue with W2K, and I believe it can happen with other versions, though I'm not sure. I did a search for XP, and it's also an issue with it. It mentioned CD-Creator, but it actually is a much broader issue, check this KB314060 article for the XP fix. I think it's the same for W2K.

If you are running windows 98:

Boot into safe mode.

Run regedit


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS

Look for the string "NoIde"
Make sure that you find this exact string it will be a string value in the right hand pane. Delete the NoIde entry. Reboot your computer.

This only works if you have Win95 or Win98.

Just saw you said xp disk. Hopefully this will help someone else then.

If it is XP can you boot up in safe mode, remove the ide controller, then reboot?

You hit it right on!

I followed that link and edited my registry as it said and rebooted and WALLAH they appeared again.

I was installing POWERDVD by Cyberlink to WinXP when it happened. So it's something to do with DVD software and Windows I think.

I am so happy. It was such a small fix and I don't know why I didn't search Microsoft for that error code
