Well, our Toshiba seems to be on its last legs here. It's taking increasing fiddling and acrobatics in order to get the power plug to the point where it'll recognize it and actually function. This is after our Toshiba supplied AC adapter died.

So after a year with the thing, my family is looking to replace the thing. We paid about $600 for the old one, and my mom isn't sure how much she wants to pay for a replacement. So 400-600 is about the range. Lower than that would be welcomed.

At the moment the laptop we have is a 1.5 GHZ model with 512 MB of RAM and a 40 gig hard drive. So optimally we'd like something at least that good or better. My little brother plays World of Warcraft, so we'd like it to be able to run that. A bigger hard drive is something we'd also like, as what we have is a little cramped.

What we'd really like was the thing to last for at least two years. We don't have the money to buy a new computer every year. This is the third laptop we've had that has had the power connector turn to absolute crap. So we'd like something a bit more durable.

This is something that's carried around on a day to day basis as well, as it accompanies my siblings to social events at the local church and community center, which have Wifi. We have Wifi in the home so a built in Wifi card is a must.

A CD/DVD player is a must also. Burning capability, not so much.

Everyone here is used to Windows, so XP is required. No Vista.

Just a suggestion and I am not sure how much longer Dell is going to do this. Dell Vostro (and maybe others) can have XP preinstalled. Here is a link that may help you:

They are a little more than you may wish to pay, but it is the only BIG manufacture that I know of that has XP preinstalled. They are also New and are dual core.
Hope this helps,
Thanks.

one concerned though, if you are having bad power connectors, are you using surge protectors? If not, you need to.

I wasn't aware we needed to. And it's the physical connector that's the problem. I have to wiggle the power cord all over the place before I find the right alignement for it to connect.

As far as your power connector, there is a very good possibility that the connector on the Mobo is damaged. Many times the laptop can be disassembled and the connector repaired or replaced (around $150.00). This will require someone who is knowledgable in this sort of repair. The connector is usually part of the motherboard. Here is a link that may give you additional info:

I am unsure of your particular model.
Thanks,

Stay away from Compaq/HP. I have one and don't plan to buy one again. Get something more durable, that will last you a few years, and don't be afraid to pay a bit more than you want to get something good.

Acer makes good laptops, and so far my girlfriend's new IBM/Lenovo is neat.
