Long Beep during POST and no monitor connection working?

5479 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  linderman
Hey all,

I'm new at this computer building bizzo but i thought some practise in the form of building my new computer would come in handy. Specs are:

ASUS A8N-E Motherboard
AMD Atholon 3500+ (Winchester Core)
2x 256MB of Dual-Channel GeiL RAM
Abit X850XT-PE (PCI-Express)
Seagate 200GB SATA HDD
Thermaltake Shark Case (430W inbuilt PSU)

I was sure i installed everything right and after connecting the power and booting the computer up, waas rewarded with all fans working and all Case LED's on. However after a couple of seconds, a long beep eminated from the speakers and then stopped for a few seconds and then started again. It contiuosly beep until i turned the computer off (when the computer was on, the montior displayed a 'No Signal Detected').

Could any of you knid souls please try and figure out what is happening? Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John

check what the beep is telling you here
www.bioscentral.com
the p/s looks a bit on the light side
Hey dai, i looked round that site you gave me and I've found that Award BIOS beeps is the one i'm looking for. However i looked at the examples and i couldn't see mine there.

My 3 seconds after turing the computer on, a 1.5 second beep can be heard, and then silence for 3 seconds and then a 1.5 second beep and then 3 seond silence, etc...

Thanks,
John
Welcome to TSF:

My gut feeling and my poor memory tells me its a video card error ????

I would try a spare video card if possible / unhook some unneeded componets and try with the bare minimum / like dont power on the cd-rom drive or remove a sound card (and anything else not required for boot up) then try a boot up / I am thinking like Dai >> unfortunately Thermaltake is not a high quality PSU and as such you are only running 430 advertised watts (really more like 400) that would be a tough rig to run on 400 watts ?????

If possible I would try a spare video card (espcecially an old PCI slot version) the PCI express cards hog alot of power !!!!

When buying a PSU look for Enermax or Antec 550 watts/ they are both high quality units with affordable pricing (you could always sell off your existing one on ebay)

Thanks for your help linderman, but i don't have any spare video cards (only AGP ones anyway). So you think i should get a new PSU then do you...hmm...I'll look around for one and report back when i've tried another one.

Thanks very much to yourself and dai, youv'e both been a big help.
These forums are very good and all recommended them to my friends.

Thanks,
John
John:

You may try a local PC shop and buy an old PCI slot video card / I love them for diagnostic work >> especially when a video card is the suspect !!

they are dirt cheap $5.00 not more than $10.00 and it will rule out any other problems (mobo, ram , etc)

goodluck keep us posted

Hello:

O further expound on Dai's response / try one stick of memory / make sure to review mobo manual carefully for correct slot use for a single stick configuration >> cant just install them anywhere ???

regards

let us know
Just tested a theory, in which both sticks in dual-channel had the beep thing happening, one stick had a beep happening, no RAM and it beeped the same as it did the last two tests, a couple different stick of older RAM, it still beeped.

Therefore, i can extrapolate and say that the RAM isn't the problem as is still had the funny beep thing happening regaurdless of how much or what type of RAM was placed in.

Regaurds,

John
