LITE-ON dvdr burner won't burn cdr correctly

my lite on burns dvdrs and cdrs fine. reading the dvdr's are fine afterwards but the cdrs are unreadable after burning it on that lite-on...i replicated the same procedure with a cdr burner and the cdr reads correctly? any ideas what could be the problem? i think i might need a firmware upgrade what do you think? thank you.
