I would like to try Linux on one of my computers. Could everyone take a moment to give me their views and thoughts on it?

The system is like unix.... its annoying, but secure ... if Windows kicks your *** I would stay away from it :D. But if you've been getting board with what Windows offers give it a try.

I would recommend Mandrake 8.2 its user friendly as Linux gets and even has some wizards. Not to mention to date it has the best database of recognized hardware.

I play with it when I can. I haven't been able to play with lately. :( Mandrake is easy to use, with RedHat close second. I've seem to like Caldera. Oh yeah, Corell have a version out a long time ago, not sure if they still do. That was extremely easy. The setup was as easy as windows.

What are you trying to get accomplished with using linux. If you want a be-all server using linux the best and easiest to manage is by far e-smith. It has builtin dhcp services, mail server, webserver, sql, router, firewall, ftp server, user accounts and a snot load of other things. check them out at www.e-smith.org

Is there any recommended reading for Mandrake other than the supplied user guide. Say an insider's guide of how to make use of it's best attributes. Our tech college centers on MS OSs, with a little NetWare, UNIX, Linux and I'm waiting to see what else.:|

Well, who ever you are (I can't see the user names), the minute you go to any browser after loading mandrake it goes to the main mandrake site that has LOTS of interesting reading.

BTW after the initial hard drive partitioning, Mandrake loads easier than windows and sees more hardware without asking for drivers.

oh by the why mandrake is garbage
Why do you say it's garbage I use it and think it is the best distro for a new Linux user.

Maybe for an experienced user like you it's garbage but for a newbie I would recommend it highly.................:D

I agree with speedo, Mandrake is not crap, oh and off topic neither is XP. Now 98 could use some help but the XP is build on an entirely new kernel and is the most stable MS OS released. Not to mention that 99.0% of the market ... like it or not is made for Windows, everyone right now must use a Microsoft OS if they want to take advantage of the 2000 + dollar computer they bought, and in my option XP should be everyones choice as the most error free MS OS. As far as Linux Iv tried them all, and they are all stable, none crash -- and Mandrake is the most user friendly.

I disagree i put WINDOWS XP to the test very unstable i would
rather use mandrake then XP i was reading windows NT is more
stable then XP and why trust bill gates every O.S. he gave use
is unstable lets see we have windows 3.1, we have windows 95,
we can't forget windows 98, 2000, and ME that one has to be
the worst windows NT, windows XP and every one is disappointing as the other i think every one is better off with
out bill gates come on every idea he had he stole he stole ideas
from his friend he stole money from apple computers and this is the guy you want to trust thats america...
