Linux no HD?

Does anyone know of a version of Linux that runs without a Hard Drive?
I'm trying to help out a teacher friend of mine who wants a maintenance free computer/web machine. I figure the easiest way to do this is cut a cd with a working os that connects to dhcp. Once the computer is up and running, I assume you could have included a browser and a connection to the network printer.
I know the original setup would be difficult, but once it is cut to a cd, I don't see how the software would break.
Hardware is another issue, I'm thinking of using an old video game box.
Any ideas?

www.linux.org

look for floppy/cd distro's there are plenty out there that'll run off the floppy or CD and work well in RAM disk as well.
