Hey Guys,

I have an old HP Pavillion XH226 laptop and it currently has windows 2000 on it.
I only use it to watch DVD's. I would like to wipe windows and put a very lite distro of linux on there. Simply just for net browsing, youtube, facebook etc.

Ubuntu is to big for my laptop.

Is there any advise on a lite distro for older systems?.

If you go for the Xubuntu approach please let us know how you get on.
I have tried and failed with two laptops due to memory problems and I am just waiting for a couple of 128MB sodimms before trying again,

I found that DSL boots from both with no problems using 64MB RAM on a DELL PII 366XT and 80MB on a HiPro PI 166MMX

I tried Puppy Linux on the 166MMX after "borrowing" the 64GB memory stick from the DELL but the screen colours were lousy at 1024*768 using the max size for the LCD. although on another CRT based PC the colours were OK.

The memory from the HiPro wouldn't fit the DELL so I couldn't try that, hence waiting for a couple of memories.

It would help to know the exact specifications (mainly CPU model and clock rate, amount of RAM, hard drive space). Puppy Linux is supposed to be a good choice for old machines. The minimum system requirements are fairly low for an easy to use operating system.

Some general rules are avoid KDE and Gnome. Lighter window managers (or desktop environments) like fluxbox and XFCE should run much faster.

Just to let you know that I haven't forgotten this ..

Upgraded both my old laptops by adding or replacing existing memory
HiNote 166MHz now has 208MB and the Dell now has 128MB.

I downloaded and installed Slax V6.1 to a flash disk & LIVE CD
My flash drive wouldn't boot on either laptop.

The LIVE CD booted on the DELL 366Mhz with just 128MB, with full basic functionality

On a P4 1,6GHz with 128MB desktop, this afternoon, all I could do was boot into the desktop with limited functionality. With 256MB booted with full basic functionality.

The HiNote couldn't cope with slax from the CD.
