Could be either defragmenting in the background if you've set up a third-party defragmenter to do that, or it will be indexing files for faster search performance (indexing of files is turned on by default).
You can disable file indexing by right-clicking the appropriate drive icon & selecting 'Properties'. Untick the box which says "Allow indexing of files" then click OK.
If you rarely use the file search tool, indexing is a waste of resources anyway so you're better off disabling it.

Right click the Taskbar and start the Task Manager. Go to the Performance tab and see what activity if any is going on. Then you can check the Processes tab to see that the process is.
Thank you there seems to be a few with numbers flashing. Don't have a clue what they are. Afraid I am a novice.
Well, write them down and post them and we can help you sort it out.
Go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl in the Add Remove Programs uninstall AVG. Restart the computer and see if that solves the problem then install Microsoft Security Essentials
