I'm just wondering if anyone knew about this. Basically I'm buying a new laptop soon that comes pre-loaded with Vista. I really don't want vista so I plan on removing it and installing XP. I have XP pro that I bought when I built my desktop a few years ago and I'm just wondering if it's legal for me to use the same key and discs to install XP on my laptop as I have on my desktop. I still use my desktop and will continue to even after getting my laptop. I know Windows uses it's verification or whatever for updates and all. So I'm just wondering if I'll be able to use the same key and discs, or if I'll have to buy a new set. Thanks.

if the xp you purchased was oem, then you cannot use it. It must be a full retail version for you to transfer to another computer. If you are currently using it on any computer or used it for justification or any upgrade, then you cannot transfer it and you will have to purchase another full retail version of xp.

I strongly urge you to check for xp drivers before getting rid of vista. If none are available, then you really need to stick with vista. You will need to check with the laptop manufacturers website for the drivers because there may be modifications in the specifications of the motherboard so just because its model number is the same dont mean the drivers from the motherboards manufacturer will work.

You can't use the same version of XP on the new PC, especially since you want to continue using it on the other PC. You can, however, downgrade the new PC from Vista to XP Professional, but ONLY if the new PC comes with Windows Vista Business or Ultimate pre-installed.

To downgrade, you would install XP using your XP Pro CD and Key from the old computer. Then when you need to activate Windows, you would have to call Microsoft and give them your VISTA product key and they'll walk you through the rest. You can read more here. (PDF)

Also check that the PC does have XP drivers available before you wipe Vista.
