Leadtek 6600 fan problem

844 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Andrew S.
I have a Leadtek 6600GT which has developed a fan bearing noise. Searches show that this is not an unusual problem. I dont know whether to RMA the card or just replace the fan with a different make. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Hi,

Did you use a can of air to blow that fan out. I also have been known to take a toothpick and put some WD-40 in a cup and then dip that toothpick in there and when a drop is on the toothpick, place it on the fan bearing area. That will sometimes quiet them down if you take the dust out first. If it were mine and under warranty and cleaning does not solve the problem, I would RMA it.
Hi Tumbleweed, I did take it out and clean it and its now cleaner than squeaky clean. Still got the hum though. What concerns me is that I have seen reports of this occurence happening before and if I RMA it the whole business could happen again in a few months time. One owner reported that his fan went after only 1 month.
If Leadtek are using an improved fan for their cards now well thats fine, but if not I might as well invest a few dollars in something better.
Hi,

I know what I would do if I were you.

If you have the bucks for a better card, then get one, send this one back for a RMA. When it comes back, advertise it on Ebay and get some bucks back from it. You do need to know that many of the newer ones are having that same problem because of the intense heat they generate. Some however have it under control. I use ATI and have not had that problem with any card that I have purchased through the years.
Thanks TW - Good thought. I'd like a new card but there is a small problem with WAF and having a joint account.
