Layer 1 Virus

So my friend told me he got hit by a virus. It took out his power supply. He changed it, and then it took out his new one. He removed the Hard Drive, and tried another power supply. Nothing happened. But now he has a deadly virus on his spare HD.

Does anyone know what type of virus this is? Where it may be located? How to delete the virus without losing the data on the HD?
