Okay guys I still have a problem... I am trying to install an operating system, preferably Win98 since it's what he knows, and then get AOL DSL service working.
My problem would be that I have removed everything in the computer except the motherboard, the CPU, the 128Meg stick of Kingston RAM, the CD ROM and floppy drive, and the brand new GeForce 2 Ti video card, but when I go to install Win98 I get a blue screen saying:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C005338 in VXD VMM(01) + 00004338. The current application will be terminated.

So far I have fdisk/formatted 3 times, done a full surface scan w/ scan disk once, and wipe/formatted using Maxtor's utilities 2 times.... So I doubt it's anything residual with the hard drive... I replaced the IDE ribbon right before the last install, and I still got the message.

Also I gave XP a shot after replacing the cable but before I tried Win98, and it looked like it was going to install fine, but he doesn't want to have to relearn Windows, so I went to quit and try Win98, and it gave me a message saying:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If this is the first time you have received this message please restart your computer. Otherwise make sure any new hardware is properly installed. Disable caching or shadowing in the BIOS. Or reboot to safe mode, remove the new software/hardware and try again

The second message isn't verbatim, because it was 11:30 and I was too lazy to hand copy it word for word. The only thing good that came out of last night is the computer is now at my house, so I have access to different parts, and don't have to go to his house to fix it. Well guys/gals its open season on this one... I'm ready to give up and let a professional deal with it for $50/hr... or I'll build him a new one... but I'm tired of this crap

I'll copy my 13 GB to my main, and give it a shot on that.... but the funny thing is.. I took his HD to my house, hooked it up to my comp and installed ME without a problem.. the only time I get a blue screen is when I use his machine... if it's the mobo or CPU I may as well see if I can get him something better that the AMD K6-2 550 on an AOpen AX59Pro that he's got in there.

I have a 256MB stick of PC133 in my comp that I'll pop in and see what it does, because other than the KINGSTON ram failing I can't think of what to blame/destroy

SMIRK!!!! I used that exact Machine for almost 2 years without problems... so I dunno.... but I guess a BIOS update never hurt anyway... but the funny thing is that Mobo and processor aren't supposed to work....LOL

According to AMD that 550Mhz CPU isn't compatible what anything they've listed.... so I still think I may have an anomaly of the PC world... WOO I'll sell it as a freak show.... the PC that shouldn't B....LOL
