Latest Linux Operating System?

1308 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  hal8000
I was going to start studying for the COMPTIA Linux + certification, but I need to know what the latest operating system the COMPTIA Linux + focus's on. Does anyone here who works on Linux know the latest operating System the COMPTIA Linux + would focus on?

The people in the Certification and Career section seem to not have a clue.

Not really sure what the exam focuses on (I've never been interested in getting the certification), but fundamentals are fairly independent of the distribution. One really great thing about *nix operating systems is they have so many similarities that if you know one well, most of the knowledge transfers to others. This extends beyond Linux distributions to Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris, etc. There are even books that mainly cover topics that apply to all of them.

If you need to pick some specific distributions to tinker with, I'd say use CentOS and Debian. CentOS is basically the same as RHEL, so that covers RPM based distributions. Matter of fact, CentOS is binary compatible with RHEL. Many distributions are Debian based, which use a different package management system than CentOS. Both distributions can be a great choice for servers.

Have you checked the test prep area of the site?

Never heard of that one but the one that will get you a job is Linux Professional Institute

http://www.lpi.org/

And if you're an LPi then you can work on any system based on System V or BSD style.
The latter will include FreeBSD, Solaris and Mac OSX

hal8000,

If you have a look then you will see that Comptia Linux + cert is teaming up with the LPI. see here
