Large number of websites cause Windows IE to crash, please help!

Hello there!
I've had this HP laptop running Win XP Pro-SP3 for almost two years. Since the very beginning, I've had this ongoing problem with websites causing IE to crash when accessed. I would say that this problem occurs with about 15 - 20 percent of sites. Examples of problem sites include:
http://www.cbs.com/daytime
http://www.ustream.tv
and many, many more. Does anyone have some idea as to what might be causing this and how to correct it?
