Hi everyone,

I have a Lenovo E450 laptop that is probably 8 months old. I put my laptop on sleep mode last night and returned to it this morning to find that the screen will not turn on.

Essentially, when I press the power button the red ThinkPad light turns on, but the screen does not load. When I tried to power it off to see if turning it off manually would help, I needed to hold it down for about 8 seconds before the ThinkPad light flashes on and off twice before going off.

The Ethernet connector on the right side has two indicators that show the status of the network connection -- yellow and green, which I believe show when the computer is connected to a LAN and when data is being transmitted. Both of them are on, though the red ThinkPad light is off.

This is the first time I'm experiencing this issue and I'm just not sure what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do?

Hi and :welcome: to TSF!
Unplug the AC adapter, remove the battery then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds. Plug in the adapter only and turn it on. If the screen still doesn't turn on, reinsert the battery and connect it to an external display/monitor and see if it works with it just fine.

Thank you for responding. I have a few follow up questions:

For some context, I've found that holding down the power button now gets the computer to load the start screen, but only for a few seconds before it turns off.

(1) I've been searching for examples of E450 batteries being removed and notice that each example starts with them recommending you press F1 several times and disconnect the battery before doing this. Am I safe to assume this is safe? I know the it still has some power because it loads on for a few moments.

(2) I am extremely nervous to do this without proper guidance on a E450. Is there a place where I can get a detailed walkthrough for what to do? I want to make sure I do not damage anything.

I decided to just go ahead with it and try it out.

I dislodged the connection between the coin cell battery and the E450. I then placed the computer back on the table and held down the power button.

The computer would start up, show the main "ThinkPad" screen, just begin the process of starting up, and then turn off. The red light goes out, though the LED ethernet lights remain on the entire time. With the battery still disconnected, I continue to hold it down for over 15 seconds.

As you suggested, I then plugged the AC adapter back in and turned it on. The light would come on, but nothing else would happen. When I'd hold it down a second time, it would flash twice after 8 seconds and turn off. Only when it is disconnected from the AC adapter does it begin the process of loading.

I then reattached the coin cell battery and turned the laptop back over, but again, the only time it will turn on is when the AC is not connected, and once it starts to load, it turns off about 2 seconds after that point.

In short: the computer only begins to load when the AC is not connected, regardless of whether the battery is in or not. And then it turns off after a second or tow.

Any thoughts?

You got it wrong. By battery I did not mean the coin-cell CMOS battery. I meant the bulky, rechargeable li-on block battery that powers your laptop while the AC adapter is unplugged. You unplug the AC adapter and remove this battery, to disconnect all power sources for the laptop, then you press the power button as if to turn it on, but it won't turn on because it has no power source. The idea is to drain all residual electric current that may still be present in the system's circuitry. After this, you insert the battery and plug in the AC adapter then turn the laptop on and let it boot to Windows.
