I have a Compaq laptop which has Windows XP on it. I usually run it plugged into the wall also. The cord has a AC adapter on it which then plugs into the computer. The battery needs to be charged up also.
My problem is that it doesn't want to start now. The green light is on showing it has power from the outlet. I push the on button and it just starts for a second and then doens't do anything. The fan doesn't run or the hard drive. I'm hoping this is simple and has something to do with the AC adapter. The adapter never seems to be warm when I touch it and I would think it would be warmer since it is lower the amount of power to the computer. Any suggestions?

I removed the battery. No go. Also with the battery in it, it says it has no power on it. Well the orange led flashes which means it has no power on the battery. It should've had power in it because before it shut off by itself, it should've been charged or been charging with the AC adapter plugged into the computer.
I just did notice something though. I plugged the AC adapter cord back into the wall. Then I plugged it into the computer and on the little outlet on the computer, some sparking happened. Please tell me this is an adapter problem.

Well for now its working again. For some reason its working for now. Backed up everything, whew! Same problems as Fox's, but when I turn on the power button the second light does come on and then it would just sit there. Also when I did try starting, it was not the hard drive that started to spin up, it seems to be the floppy drive that spun for a split second. Could this be the floppy drive? I disabled it for now in the Device Manager. I really don't use it.
I also tried taking out the battery, hard drive, memory, and some modem card and it still wouldn't start. Today it did start. Perhaps I'll have to take it in. Is there any good software to monitor my CPU? It would need to be some freeware program. I would like to know if the CPU is bad. Who knows how long my laptop will run. Thanks.

Well even after a day its still working. Maybe its one of the unknown forces of computer evil!

I had more problems the past few days. Then today it would start up, get onto the desktop, reboot, get into the desktop, then reboot. Then I finally decided to do the Restore disk. It got to about 25% twice and then it rebooted. Finally the third time it worked. Windows is reinstalled. I've now had no problems. Now my question is would my computer be having problems because of the hard drive having a lot of corrupt data on it? I'm hoping this problem stays away now since the drive was reformatted and windows XP was reinstalled.
