I am currently looking to do a clean install of windows 98 on a Dell Latitude LM laptop computer. The problem that I am having is there is only a spot for a floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive, but not both at the same time. I thought that copying the startup disk to the C: drive would work, but it still won't recognize the CD-ROM. I have done it before, but forgot how to do it, so if anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Boot the floppy and do the following commands:

FDISK /MBR
SYS C:

This will install basic DOS onto the hard disk. You then need to edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to add the CD driver to CONFIG.SYS and MSCDEX to AUTOEXEC.BAT. Of course, you'll also have to copy the drivers over to the C: drive.

You should then be able to boot from the hard disk with the CD enabled. Copy the contents of the Win98 directory to a Win98 directory on the hard disk. You can then CD to the WIN98 directory and run the setup.
