What does upgrading a video card in a laptop take? sodering? etc.

also, if anyone knows, I have a mobility radeon 9700. would that application be directly compatible with a mobility radeon 9800 or are they different in configuration?

Thanks!

The vast majority of laptops do not have upgradeable video. The only ones which have it are large and expensive high-end gaming laptops. And most of the laptops which do have upgradeable video require you to send the machine back to the manufacturer for the upgrade. The Alienware 51-M was one of the exceptions which allowed you to do the upgrade yourself. You should check the website of the laptop manufacturer to see if it's upgradeable.

Yup, just as UM said. Some laptops have the video card on a duaghterboard that can be replaced. My laptop has that type of system so I can toss a 5700 in there later on. If I will or not remains to be decided. As for the rest, they are integrated. Those can't be upgraded without replacing the entire mainboard which is pretty much like getting a new laptop.
