My laptop is a sony vaio vgnfw41e bought about two years ago. Randomly the screen blanks out, from some angles you can still see the display but very very dim, normally it just looks black. Its hooked to a flat screen TV through HDMI and while blank it shows normally on that. Its rare but can happen several times in a row. Took it back to waitrose who sent it off, but they refused to do anything as its ok when they look at it. Obviously as its random I can't replicate it. It obviously could get worse in the future by which time its out of guarantee, in fact I think it is now. It runs Vista. Any ideas on what it could be or what I could do? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your responses. It works OK on the TV screen even when its blanked out on the laptop monitor. As I said I tried sending it back to waitrose, they sent it to the people who do their extended guarantees and they sat on it for 3 weeks waiting for the symptoms to start. As its intermittent it never did and they refused to do anything about it. Anyway you have at least given me in indication of what it is which is useful.

Thanks for your response, when/if it gets worse I will go to waitrose and raise hell, it should not do this after less than 2 years, and its not good enough that they refuse to acknowledge it just because its intermittent. If I get nowhere I will take your advice and get it repaired, as it sounds cheap. INCIDENTALLY.....for anyone reading this, my nephew bought the exact model I did and gets the same issue...........
