1) The computer cannot run without memory.

2) Without a working hard drive with an Operating System installed on it, (such as Windows), the computer is pretty much useless.

One reason a computer will start to a black screen, or to a black screen with an error message on it, is because the hard drive has failed and the computer simply can no longer boot up an Operating System.

(All mechanical hard drives will fail because they have moving parts which cause wear. And when that wear becomes great enough, the hard drive can no longer do what it was designed to do.)

Solution: Replace the worn out hard drive with a new one.

Hello,

I replaced the hard drive with a new one and was going to install os on it when after putting in the hard drive and turning on it started restarting again with nothing on the screen.

Another thing that could be wrong is that it's overheating and shutting down to keep from starting a fire.

1) How old is the laptop?

2) Does it show the temps it's reaching in the CMOS/BIOS Setup?

(While you're in the CMOS/BIOS Setup, try resetting it back to factory defaults, saving the change and exiting).

Something else that could cause restarts is flakyRAM. Might want to try and run Memtest86+ overnight and see if it produces any errors.

Hi,

It's 2 years old. I can't get to the setup because as soon as you press the power button it comes on then off and continues again. Doesn't show anything on the screen.

Might try cleaning it out thoroughly , re-seating the RAM, and disconnecting/reconnecting the CMOS battery.

If still no luck, try (borrow) some known-good RAM.

Perhaps you should tell us what happened right before the onset of this problem. For example, has it been in storage for a long time and it was fully operational last time you used it, or have you been using it and then it suddenly went off, or has it been crashing and now it won't start at all or did you disassemble it for cleaning and now it won't boot, or did the AC adapter stop working and you replaced it or the battery died and you bought a new one or did it fall on a hard surface or got knocked? A history of the problem could save us lots of speculation, so kindly tell us what happened.
