My laptop is dell inspiron i5 5567 7th generation 1TB HDD 8 GB RAM laptop.I purchased this 4 years ago for university.

Currently the problems in laptop are-:
1) 100% disk usage and laptop kind of freezes, when I click nth happens, when I try to scroll, nth happens, no reaction by laptop.

2) Even without 100% disk usage same thing happens.

What I tried-:
Every method for fixing 100% disk usage. I haven't left a single tutorial or forum qna. That is how far I have gone really. I am yet to format and install windows though.

Q1) Any advice on that?

What I am planning to do-:

1) Upgrade SSD 2.5'' sata ssd is what I support in laptop..256 GB. My harddisk is 500 GB full.

2) Upgrade 8 GB RAM to 16 GB RAM by adding another 8 GB RAM.

But is this really necessary at all? Can this problem be fixed by repairing in workshop?

Any way to repair this? You have idea to fix this freezing?

I have no option to buy a laptop as my family don't have 1200$ currently to buy a laptop. It is a possibility only after 2+ years really.

Workload-: Simply reading pdf. I need to open 30-40 tabs at once. That is why I am thinking of adding RAM. As well as I stream myself(cams on) on discord server for motivation. So you can imagine my RAM usage.

I will definitly need this laptop to learn programming as well. But it is all basic programming learning like web development mostly not advanced. So I don't need hi-fi laptops.


IWTL if I should upgrade(and if upgrading helps or not), or just repair myself? I won't go to shop to repair as my family won't allow me to do it. So tell me some tutorials to repair if(software part not hardware).

First off, since currently SSD drives are pretty inexpensive, why not upgrade to a larger drive instead of a smaller drive? Your disk is full and you're downsizing the disk? Also, an SSD will do good things for the overall speed, paging to virtual memory will be much faster with the SSD.

After installing the larger SSD, I'd reinstall Windows with a fresh install, many times that cures a lot of ills!

As long as it's in the budget, adding another 8GB of RAM sure won't hurt.

Yes, I believe you should definitely try to repair, and then upgrade. I think the freezing comes either from software (your operating system running) or hardware (could be dust, liquid damage etc.).

When you say 100% disk usage, you mean it's at 100% usage even in idle or do you mean that it is at full capacity ? If it's 100% while idle, what is your current operating system and build ? Could you show us your task manager and processes running while it's at 100% ?

It could just be a system issue, so I would definitely recommend to try and fix that issue or, because you say you have tried everything, to format your system (after backing up the data in your drive somewhere else).

Move your User files to the USB HDD (ie) Documents, Pictures, Music etc. If you Move the files, not just copy them, this will create a lot of space on your drive and it should start working correctly. Microsoft suggest that your OS drive should be at least 10-15% Free to allow Windows Page file, and System Restore among other processes to work. Purchasing the same size SSD or Smaller, will not solve your problem. If you don't move your User files, you are going to need a larger drive not smaller.

My disk isn't full. My disk is 500 GB free. out of 1 TB. Even when idle it shows 100% disk usage that's the issue man

my HDD is 50% free. Still it shows 100% disk usage that's the issue.

I know that for early Windows 10 builds (pre-1809), I encountered this issue and did this :

1. Launch the Settings app.
2. Click the "System" category.
3. Click the "Notifications & actions" page.
4. Clear the "Get tips, tricks and suggestions as you use Windows" checkbox.

It is very likely that this is NOT related to your issue. But just a heads-up. We need your task manager with the processus running to check if 100% is due to something or not. For instance, I had 2Mo/s total of usage and it said 100% disk usage and clearing the tricks checkbox solved the issue at the time (4-5 years ago).

Try performing a Clean Boot. If everything is working fine now you can keep it this way or, you can add one Startup item and/or Service at a time until it slows down again. When it does you will have found your culprit.

That HDD is probably failing. Replace it with another HDD or SSD (recommended) and a fresh Windows installation. If the ailing drive has important data on it that you haven't backed up yet, I suggest you stop using it right away, continuing to do so gets it closer and closer to its death. You can retrieve and backup its data without booting from it, all you need is a data backup rescue media (e.g. Macrium Reflect) and an external USB HDD or SSD to save the retrieved data. If your unit has an optical disc drive, you can replace it with an ODD HDD caddy like this one https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-Alumi..._1_2?keywords=odd+caddy&qid=1669216844&sr=8-2 carrying a new HDD and use the 2.5" HDD bay for the smaller SSD.
