OK, I am a complete noob when it comes to laptops, I have a question. Is it possible to put a different processor in a laptop? I know that the board cannot be switched but I am under the impression that like a PC the same board can run different chips. I have an HP Pavilion ze 2000 that was just given to me. It had a sssssslllllllooooooowwwwwww AMD duron processor, but on doing research it SEEMED that I could put a Turion in that was way faster. I have put that in (pain in the butt, used to PC) and it won't turn on now. So question 2 is if I can switch the processor do I need to update bios or do anything special on a laptop that I wouldn't have to on a PC?

The Bios and the chipset have to support the CPU, unfortunately there is not a published CPU support list for laptops, because of the nature of laptop design for temperature and power requirements/restrictions not all CPU's that seem like they should work will work.
That being said before changing a CPU it always a good idea to update the Bios first to get the latest CPU support, being OEM HP you could try Emailing HP support to see if they will tell what CPU's are supported on that model, the desk top side of HP is pretty good about it the notebook side not so hot but it's worth a try.

Have you checked the CPU temps?

Ok I found the Hp manual for the laptop online. It lists the new processor as one that can be used with this laptop. how do I check the temps besides looking in BIOS? it won't even power on with the new chip in to let me get to the Bios.

Ok I got it working man thanks for your time. One more question (it's always something right?) I got it up and put windows 7 on it and there are no drivers for the soundcard in windows 7. HP has nothing for it on their site. The answer is probably no but is there anywhere else I could go to get drivers? please let me know if so.

Do you have a yellow question mark in device manager and no sound?
Win 7 so far has been good about finding it's own drivers, most of the time the Vista driver will work.

To open "Device Manager", right click on "My Computer" (Computer in Vista/Win7) select Properties, On the Hardware tab Select Device Manager, if you see any yellow question marks, right click on the device and select properties, on the Details tab select Hardware IDs copy the PCI/VEN and DEV numbers and post them on your next post.

I went to that link to realtec's site but when I tried to get the drivers it kept coming up with a screen that said "object moved to here" with a link on here. when I click the link it just keeps reloading the same screen. any other ideas? if not maybe I'll just have to format and put xp back on.
