laptop lcd monitor link

My Dell LCD monitor goes into power save mode and stays there when linked to my Inspiron laptop. However the monitor works with my HP desktop and my old Dell laptop. Note: before disconnecting the laptop for a trip, there was no problem. Suggestions???

Are you using the function key to enable the external monitor?
