I've been trouble shooting the problem of keyboard keys prompting other windows and action other than typing letters. I can work for 4 hours normally, then wham, no longer works. I've followed all suggestions from Asus, including completely resetting my laptop, reinstalling Windows etc etc. Uninstalled Keyboard driver, rebooted etc etc. I was going to just put in a new keyboard, but when I plug in an External USB Keyboard, it does the same thing. I didn't know if an external keyboard actually works on it's own, or if it mainly replicates the same software/hardware and duplicates.

Hi sounds like have a stuck key possibility ctrl, win, alt key one of those keys could be stuck intermittently. You would have to remove laptop keyboard ribbon cable when hooking up external as if one of the keys is stuck on laptop it will register as both keyboards can be typed on. Laptop keyboard doesn’t get disabled when external is plugged in.

You've pretty much done what's necessary to diagnose this as most likely having some sort of hardware problem, and on the motherboard, as the issue. Using an external keyboard is one of the key diagnostic steps to isolating whether the issue is with the built-in keyboard (which is, by far, the most likely scenario) or somewhere outside of it.

Given the steps you state you have already taken, and that the behavior persists with an external keyboard, my advice is to start looking for a new PC. (Or, if this machine is new enough to be under warranty, pursue a claim).

So you definitely think the external USB Keyboard would perform independent of the other? Even though it states you can use either/both? I mean a new keyboard installed is only $85, a comparible laptop is $1500!

I wondered why when I open Virtual Keyboard, it usually shows both Ctrl key as depressed, even though they are not. So even though I tried an external, a new keyboard might work?

Well i have no problems taking laptop keyboards off. Some are harder then others first thing I would do is remove keyboard and try external if still same issue then most likely have a problem on the motherboard.

I did make an assumption that is unwarranted: If things are working normally, can you plug in that external keyboard and work on it for hours without any issue recurring. If so, @oscer1 is most likely correct that it's an intermittent failure on the built-in keyboard. Disconnecting it and having only the external in use for diagnostics should confirm whether the built-in is bad, as the trouble should not occur if the external keyboard is known to be good and there's no input from the built-in at all.

I was hasty. You must isolate the external keyboard and its input from the internal entirely for a definitive answer. If you keep getting the same issues with the internal keyboard disconnected, then signs point to motherboard.

I'm far more inclined to believe bad laptop keyboard (it's generally the first thing I suspect).
