I have a laptop that took a nasty fall down a set of stairs and refuses to boot up, if i plug in the charger cable the fan turns on for 2 seconds and turns off but continues to charge, the montitor doesn't turn on and no signal is recieved on an external monitor, not even to bios screen. While the charger is in it makes a high pitched noises which in sequence raises the pitch. I opened it up and the only visible damage i could find was this little blue thing at my fingertip in the picture. One if it solder legs has been broken, would a simple solder job remedy the start up??

Hello,

What model ACER is this?

The part you are referring to is the CMOS battery. Try soldering the broken leg back down to see if anything changes.

Does the high pitch whine come from the laptop or the charger?

Do you get the noise if trying to start the laptop with just the battery connected?

This is an emachine e525 kawf0

The noise comes from the power port but the fan is right beside it and i can't pin point it. No the noise disapears if i pull the charger out, what is the importance of this component??

The CMOS battery basically keeps the configuration data correct.

It is still possible to boot without it you just may receive CMOS related errors.

It is likely that there is other damage preventing the laptop from starting.

Did you closely inspect the DC Jack to see if there was any damage to it?

You may want to completely strip the laptop, remove the heatsink and re-seat the CPU.

Add components back one at a time to see if the symptoms change.

The DC jack appears fine, when i remove the heat sink there is a second attempt of the fan but at a much higher RPM?? The noise is actualy coming from the CPU??

Did you re-seat the CPU yet?

You will also need to clean and re-apply the thermal paste.

Possible problem with the motherboard.

Although the PC is not starting it is not recommended to run the laptop without the heatsink attached.
