Laptop crashed...now screen all dim

I was using my laptop (win xp) when all of a sudden it crashed. it made a long beeping sound and then froze, so I had to restart. now, the screen is really dim when the AC adapter is plugged in, but brighter when it is running on just the battery (the opposite of how it's supposed to be). how can i switch this to be vice versa, like before?
