Laptop crashed, is it saveable?

1266 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sobeit
Was on my laptop doing the usual stuff, just on the internet. My browser froze and eventually my PC locked up so I hard reset it. Upon rebooting I get a message that "Operating System not found". So I try the system restore disk with the OS on it. The computer read the disk but couldnt proceed because it said I didnt have a hard drive. Is there anything I can do about this? The computer is nothing special, its a gateway laptop, cheap thing but up till now hasnt failed on me.

Ouch....may need new hard drive. Sounds like a crash.

Generally, you should be able to reinstall with a new hard drive.

Probably have to use data recovery software on your current drive.
So I can still save all the data on my dead hard drive and transfer it to a new one?

that depends upon the crashed, a couple of things you can try
1. slave it to another drive and see if you can access it
2. use a linux live cd and see if it can see the drive
3. maybe just pulling the drive and putting it back in can reset the connections.
