First and foremost thank you all for your time reading and consideration with this computer issue. I have invested a lot of my own time attempting to address this issue.

The computer is a laptop, a HP Pavilion dv9000.

Each of these images I will explain where in the boot process this took place and some details on it. I apologize for the flash glare on the screen.

This first image is before and after the HP symbol comes up on the screen, this image taken afterwarsd as it attempts to boot from the CD (An Ubuntu CD I had from my other PC.) As you can see, where text would be and the "a" artifact would be, the text is replaced by a random symbol. The computer continues on the boot process until after the Windows symbol and scrolling green bar during Windows load. Booting in normal mode, it will then do one of two things. The computer will BSOD, or the screen will go black. Attempting to use the function to change display device does not do anything when I receive the black screen.

Upon restarting the computer after a BSOD or black screen, I receive the option to boot in safe mode. This image shows how the "a" artifacts interfere with the lettering on the screen in more detail than the first image. It also does this in choosing what safe mode to use, I can only navigate it by memory.

This final image is a close up of the previous picture, for a larger view of what it is doing.

The computer will boot in safe mode, but there are light green vertical stripe artifacts across the background. These do not impede with OS processes. The "a" artifacts impede with attempted installation of additional OS's by doing the same as any other part of the boot process.

Any help would be most appreciated, this is far beyond my league.

Regards,
Kurt

Since it's a laptop, I don't really know much of the specifics on the hardware. They are all stock HP parts. I'll answer what I can though,

GeForce Go 7600
Don't know on the MoBo
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Prior to the day this began happening I was using the computer for basic things like Excel, Powerpoint and the like. I left the computer on that night, with the lid shut in a laptop's normal hibernate mode.

well only thing that horses up dos screens like the option menu to go to safemode , with special signs that i know are, vga card broken , memory broken , virus .

virus like i said in one of the posts i posted are not targeted MBR these days anymore. well not prior windows damage shown kind of way anyways .

VGA card could be excahnged to check if this is the cause if you have one laying around.
if not .
i would do :
call the tech support of the laptop to check if still in warranty , if so then do the diagnose the tech person asks , and recieve a new vga card or mem card ,
if not then you can do 2 things
1 go to a store if no money or
2 you want to try it yourself you do it your self.

openup the Laptop as the Manual informs you to do , and then take out one of the 2 mem dims and check again .
if gone its the mem dim in your hand.
if not then put the one you have currently out of the system in the system and the one that is in system take it out . and check again . if gone then its the mem dim . if not .

ID say this most likely is VGA card issue wich needs to be replaced. ( if onboard then motherboard ) OR a other pcmcia card if possible is in system this could also cause this , but the rest of the laptop as far as i know dont cause this kind of issue HOW ever.
with computers i always say EVERYTHING is possible ;)

hope this helps a bit

Hi Kurt,

Try hooking up an external monitor. If problems persists, then it could be your video chip/card or motherboard otherwise it could be just the LCD or may be something else.

So I understand this is how it behaves when booing from both Ubuntu and Windows... whether from CD or HDD. If that is the case, it could not be the drivers but something hardware.

By the way... this document might help:
