Hello folks, I have a problem with a latop which wont boot.

When its starting up, it gets to the Windows XP screen and then a blue screen flashes up for a second, but I cannont see what it says as it is only up for a second, it then starts the whole boot process again and then the same thing happens.

The laptop is an Advent 7109b running XP Media Centre edition with a fujitsu HHD.

I have tried running the HDD diagnistic tool which can be found here

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#fujitsu

Ran a full test it and it is not finding any problems.

I have now tried booting it up with a Windows disc so that I could run the recovery console. I was then met with another blue screen which stated the following:-

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer, if this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disc space, if a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manafacturer for driver updates. try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendore for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0xF7613oBF, 0F7A5F208, 0xF7A5EF09)

*** pci.sys - Address F76130BF base at F760c000, Datestamp 3b7d855c

Is this HDD completley goosed?

Any help on this would be great.

at what point did you get the blue screen when booting from the windows cd? loading files, loading recovery console? did it get to the license agreement where you need to press F8 to continue? My first guess is that your hard drive is sata and you need to load the drivers when booting from the windows disc.

But, other things can cause your computer not to boot up. Your drive is testing fine, so theres a few options you can do. One is to test your memory, I'd recommend memtest86 from http://www.memtest.org/#downiso the bootable ISO .zip, burn that to a cd and boot your computer to the cd. The other option you can try is to do a repair install of windows, same thing as above, you would need to load the sata driver when booting from the windows disc. Or the other option, you could do a system recovery using the discs that came with your laptop, but that will delete all data.

Thanks for the reply guys, I managed to get the laptop to boot after running a Hiren utility called HHD regenerator. However I am still experiencing some weird problems i.e.-

When I minimise a window, it doesnt sit in the taskbar, and I have to do Alt + Tab to open the window again.

Copy and paste isn't working.

Any help on these issues?

Run a hard drive diagnostics. I believe there is diagnostic tool for Fujitsu drives. Try the HDD diags link on my sig to download the tool (get the CD based program). Run the tool via the CD/DVD drive.

Once HDD is clear of any hard drive errors, run CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console using an XP install CD.

I have now run CHKDSK /R TriggerFinger and it reported that it found and repaired one error.

The laptop boots ok now, although it seems to be taking much longer and I am still having problems - can't copy and paste, and I can't drag and drop files.

Also, if I try and double click on an image, it wont open in it's default application, I have to right-click on it and select "open with" from the menu.

I have ran full scans with AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot and Adaware and nothing has been found. I can only guess that some important Windows files have been corrupted or something.
