Hi,

In our office, we use a ADSL modem, CISCO 800 and from there it is connected to a wireless router draft N DLink DIR 655, it is then also connected to a switch and we have some PCs and network printers directly connected by LAN cables and some through the wireless network in our office.

Thus our broadband plan is on static IP but from our wireless router it is on DHCP.

I have setup a new PC on XP SP2.1, it was able to connect wirelessly to our network using a dongle. I also directly connected it to the wireless router via direct LAN cable on LAN port 1 for faster downloads of all updates and it connected without any problems.

Now here's the cruncher, after the PC was setup correctly, I then replaced it in my boss' office and used the LAN cable in his office which connects to LAN port 2 on the wireless router. However, I kept getting 'No connection or low connection error".

I thought I had inadvertently damaged the cable so I put back his old system, an iMac and plugged in the LAN cable to it. But on the iMac, it connected without any problems when i tested the web browser. FYI, prior to using this iMac, he was using a PC but was connected via this LAN cable to LAN port 2 without any problems at all as well.

I then tried to setup up a static IP address on the new PC with the LAN cable attached but I kept getting the same error. Frustrated, I even tried the wireless dongle which initially I used when setting up the PC without any problems, but this time even the wireless dongle had problems connecting to the network!

I had updated the XP system to SP3 initially but thinking that might have caused a problem, I then rolled back the updates to SP2.1 but that didn't help either.

Thus wondering whether the network settings had problems, I then brought the new PC back to the workstation with the cable for LAN port 1 and connected it to test. However, to my surprise, it connected without any problems!!! I also tested opening a web browser and it loaded without any problems.

So I brought the PC back into my boss' office and connected it up again but again I got the same 'no connection or low connection error"!!! Upon unplugging the LAN cable (LAN port 2) and connecting it to the iMAc, the iMac could load the web browser without any problems!!!

As mentioned, just few minutes prior I had tested out the LAN conection to LAN port 1 at the other work station and it worked. Thus I physically removed the LAN cable on LAN port 2 at the wireless router and connected it to LAN port 1, but this time, it refused to work and kept giving me the same error!!!

I checked the status on the icon in the task bar, it showed that whether on DHCP or static IP, it was sending out data but could not receive any data at all. I had even shut off the XP firewall at 1 point to test.

Lastly, I prayed and plugged in the dongle again. This time it connected but I'm still having problems with the LAN connection. I have called PacNet which is our ISP but no solutions there. I have Dlink as well but also no solutions as well.

I have already tried static IP addresses with different DNS n sec DNS but to no avail.

Please please please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thx way way in advance!!!

This is a long shot, but you said "you thought you had damaged the cable", did you swop it out ?, even if it worked again on the old pc it still might be defect.

uh maybe i should try test it with a laptop or something, but u mean to say that if it's defective, some machines may not connect properly using the cable but some can? anyways, i plugged n unplugged it from the iMac at least twice to check the connection and it connected at all times without any problems. It only just refused to work on the new PC and i even checked that it was properly plugged in with green light blinking away nicely behind!!!

Thx anyways, hopefully some new ideas...
