OK....does the old video card work...???

Even with out drivers you should get a basic 16 color display??
if another card works..no problem....then it is bad video card

Both are the same type of slot....

PCI or AGP

if you get nothing from the new card and the old card works....basic 16 color VGA well then either the new card is bad (unlikley but possible) or your mate is right...:no:
