I recently received notice from myspace that my myspace page had been phished due to koobface. I found this bizarre as I am usually a pretty smart computer user and never enter my info into websites without typing the name in myself and don't download things unless they come from a very trustworthy source and don't look at all uncommon (I even call friends to make sure they've actually intended to send me files to be safe). Whatever the case, since myspace techs informed me about the fact that my page had fallen victim to koobface, I went ahead and ran a HijackThis scan on my computer. Here is the logfile (please help me figure out what I need to remove!):

I have also run McAfee and all it found were some cookies for removal. Is there anything else I should be doing to protect myself? Additionally, I purchased a couple of birthday presents for friends over the past week online. Should I be calling my credit card companies to warn them of the potential identity theft? Please let me know!

Hi,

Sorry for the delay,
please do the following:

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop
  • Double click OTS to start the program. Make sure you close all other programs and don't use the PC while the scan runs.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar. Make sure not to use the PC while the program is running or it will freeze.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Use the Add Reply button and post the information back here in an attachment. I will review it when it comes in. The last line is < End of Report >, so make sure that is the last line in the attached report.

Make sure you attach the report in your reply. If it is too big to upload, then zip the text file and upload it that way

Hi,

My apologies.

As you are running a 64bit system, there is an extra box for you to tick off...

please do the following

  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All Users
  • Check the box that says 64 bit
  • Under Additional Scans check the following
  • File - Lop Check
  • File - Purity Scan
  • Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Thank-you

I have performed the scan and am attaching the OTS scan. Sorry for the delay in performing this, but I'm a student, and it took awhile. Thanks! I look forward to hearing from you (and hopefully soon - before my computer gets eaten alive should there be any problems)!

Hi,

No indication of the Koobface virus present at all, just a few leftover files which we can clean up, then we'll run another couple of scans to be certain.

Please do the following:

Start OTS
Copy/Paste the information inside the quotebox below into the panel where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

[Kill Explorer]
[Win32 Services - Safe List]
YY -> 64bit-(Norton Internet Security) Norton Internet Security [Win32_Own | Auto | Stopped] ->
[Registry - Safe List]
< Internet Explorer ToolBars [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3038588292-3705517324-2402693399-1000\] > -> HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3038588292-3705517324-2402693399-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\
YN -> WebBrowser\\"{604BC32A-9680-40D1-9AC6-E06B23A1BA4C}" [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 30 Days]
NY -> 7 C:\Users\rfunke\AppData\Local\Temp\*.tmp files -> C:\Users\rfunke\AppData\Local\Temp\*.tmp
[Empty Temp Folders]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]
The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup either telling you that it is finished, or that a reboot is needed to complete the fix. If the fix is complete, click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that log back here in your next reply.

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
