Hi,
Well, the processes required, depends on your system. You need different processes for different machines.

If you list all of your processes, I will be more than happy to check them through, and tell you which are necessary for your system to run, and which aren't.
is there a quicker way to do that than to go through and write them all out?
Print screen it.
There should be a button on your keyboard, which says 'PrintScreen', hit it, or it will be:
PrtSc
SysRq
in which case, hold shift, and hit that key.
Open Paint, and save, then upload it.
Here is one of my favorite resources:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

The first time, it takes about 30 minutes to look up the services one by one, but after a while you remember the vital ones. The recommendations they give are pretty much right-on.
Hope this helps

Hi,

I have checked out all the processes, and here's what I found.

svchost.exe is completely necessary.
Aim.exe is AOL instant messanger, not necessary, required for running AOL instant messanger.
Zune.exe belongs to the Zune program. This is not necessary, required for running Zune.
aim6.exe also belongs to instant messanger, not necessary.
iexplore.exe belongs to Internet Explorer. Not completely necessary for XP to run.
Guard.exe isn't required, part of your security. Not advised to remove it.
Zunenss.exe isn't required, part of zune.
explorer.exe is required.
ZuneEnc.exe isn't required.
Wudfhost.exe is suppost to be part of Windows Vista, part of the drivers for it. Do you have anything which could relate to it?
taskmgr.exe is task manager.. Close task manage, and that process will be gone.
Aolsoftware.exe is just AOL software.. Not required.
AVGcc.exe is part of AVG, not required, but important to protect your system.
SpySweeperUI.exe is spyware protection, not required, but good to have as protection.
msmsgs.exe is for windows messanger. Not required.
avgamsvr.exe is part of AVG, see above.

HPZipm12.exe is for HP printer drivers. For your HP printer to work, you must have this process, otherwise, not necassary.
msdtc.exe is required.
avgupsvc.exe is for AVG, not required.
qttast.exe is required.
locator.exe is required.
PRISMXL.SYS I don't think is really required, but it is something for Gateways, I would leave this process alone.

System and System Idle Process are both required.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions on these processes, just ask

Why is qttask.exe required for a stable machine? Same applies to ctfmon.exe?

Also, surely avgupsvc.exe/avgas.exe are required...Windows may not stay stable without adequate protection.

Wudfhost.exe is not primarily a Vista process
You can compare to mine if you wish (As I showed in another thread).

Only processes owned by SYSTEM are required (explorer.exe is also needed if you want your pretty Windows GUI).

You can actually reduce the count to 8, but I haven't due to a few fundamental requirements.

Ahh, qttask, I got that mixed up with another process. Yea, that isn't required. For quick time video tray icon.
And ctfmon.exe, I suppose isn't required, for the Office Language thing, I wouldn't recomend just removing it.

And if you aren't online, then the AVG isn't required, even if you are, you may not need it if you are careful, and take certain measures. And I did say that it is not recommended to remove it for the security of your system.

With the Wudfhost.exe, I couldn't find anything on that, other than driver for Vista. Wanna explain what it would be used for in XP.
Wudfhost.exe is part of WMP 11 so would be found on many XP machines.

Also, going back to the original post...it does depend on what kind of environment the user wishes to operate. As you say Joe, if he isn't going to be online, then there's plenty of third party and even MS services and processes which can be disabled but if he intends to switch between offline gaming and online activities, then he needs to pay special attention to many third party processes :)
hmm well im online and always connected so i need avg up. and do you guys have any tips on how i can make my comptuer run faster all around?
More RAM never hurts :)

The free options is just to tweak away and gradually reduce the system to as near as bare-bones as it can get whilst staying safe. Disabling the Themes service is a good start...you'll lose the crisp colours which XP normally offers and be stuck with a 'classic style' XP but it makes a difference though it isn't for everyone.

Key thing to remember is not to expect too much...your PC can only offer you what the hardware specs say which is why more RAM is always a winner :)
are you saying if i bought more RAM, i am only runnign on 512 mb and i wanted to get atleast a gig or more. but i dont have hte money right now. what would you suggest

ive got an Intel pentium 4, 3.00 GHz then it says 2.99 GHz and 498mb of RAM which i have always been curious about. where did the rest of my 512 stick go?
Possibly shared with your graphics card???

It all depends on how much RAM your motherboard can hold and what types it can support. I have always thought that XP runs pretty well on at least a GB...anything more is a bonus. It can run fairly stable on much less but the more resource hungry programs you use (as well as Windows and all its processes and services), the more it is going to slow things down. Programs such as video and video editing and encoding programs and demanding games are amongst the most resource hungry so it all depends on what you do with your PC.
i did all of that. its a lil faster and nwo that i know those i can keep going back and doing them when my computer gets slow. thanks for all the help guys
