JPG Files converted to CHK

I had taken over 300 pictures and some videos using my Panasonic FZ8 camera. As I was running out of space, I transferred the images and video from the card to an USB stick using a Radioshack Card Reader on a PC running Windows XP

After the transfer, the pictures were not opening and it was displaying “format unrecognized” when it was opened. Due to an oversight, I right clicked the mouse and clicked on the “check memory for errors”. After that operation, all the files were moved into a hidden folder FOUND.000 and the file extensions were changed from jpg to chk.

The movie files are still there in the root, but cannot be played.

Is it possible to recover these files?

Hi malayil and welcome to TSF !

If the content got corrupted then no you can't recover them. Go to paint and use file => open (select all files under file types) to manually open the chk files. If the images are fine it's only a matter of renaming them to .jpg.

What's the file format/extension of your video files ? There are some programs on the internet that allow you to repairing the files if it's only the header that's corrupt, but I can't promise you anything.

What's the exact model of the card reader ? I would test the device to make sure that it works properly : try to copy pictures from your camera to your hard drive using it and see if you can read the files properly.
