Japanese Microsoft IME - problem with consonants

I've had the Japanese Microsoft IME software add-on for about two years and no problems until i tried downloading a Japanese to English dictionary. While testing the dictionary it seemed the consonants wouldn't show. I uninstalled the dictionary and still the same problem. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help.
