Issues with Windows 10, tabs and apps not opening, taskbar not working

Hi everyone!

I am barely able to use my laptop cause of several issues that occur minutes, sometimes seconds after starting it. If I have several tabs open in Chrome, everything is fine in the currently open one (I can type, open websites, etc.) but I can't switch to another tab. I can also not switch from one App to another. Let's say I have Chrome and a Word document open, I can navigate within the Word document, but the Chrome window is not responding. If I have been navigating in the Chrome Window, I can't go back to Word. The taskbar is also not responding, I can't shut down the laptop over the taskbar. I can also not open any new documents or applications on my desktop that aren't already open. Sometimes I can also not select/copy words unless I use ctrl+c. When I connect the laptop to a separate monitor and keyboard (via a docking station), those problems don't occur.

Can anyone help me solve this? I tried an update and a virus scan already. I am not at all a tech person.

Hello,

Basic first question we ask usually on here is brand, model and age of your laptop......

The suggestions that would normally be suggested would be to run some system scans that have no relation to virus or malware (a different type of nastyware infection). The scans that would be suggested would have to be done through the command prompt but according to your comment you are "not at all a tech person" so before we go there, do you have any family or friends that are tech literate? Any high school age family members? They would usually know exactly what to try.....I wanted to ask that before taking you where you might not be comfortable. I would also strongly suggest that you do a back up of your important data files too because if that fails it sounds like you might need to reinstall Windows and that puts your files at risk.

Don't be intimidated by what I described, everyone on here is awesome at helping both non-techs and experienced techs.....we should be able to help you through this....I am a corp. IT person with appx 25 yrs experience and even I come here for some of my crazy things that happen and have gotten wonderful help here!

Hi, thank you for the kind words! Unfortunately, as a 24-year-old uni student, I am probably still the most "tech literate" person in my family. So I will do my best to follow your instructions. The laptop is almost 2 years old, an HP 250 G7.

First off, the Google Chrome Browsers issues would be separate from any Windows problems.

Try a Clean Boot. If this works, you can Keep it this way, or you can add one Service or Startup Item at a time, until the computer starts acting strange again, you will know what the culprit is.

You can also start a Command Prompt as Admin. Copy and Paste or type the Bold statement exactly and Press Enter after.

DISM /Online /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RestoreHealth after that completes, type the following Bold command pressing Enter

SFC /scanow This will restore any missing System File

To Fix Chromes issues, Reset Chrome to Default Settings Reset Chrome settings to default - Google Chrome Help
