I've been having some trouble accessing my external HDD recently so I ran CHKDSK /r. It started out fine, but now it's stuck at 86% through stage 4. It's been like that for a couple hours now. Should I cancel it? I think my HDD is still active - I can still feel it vibrating - but it's definitely not spinning as fast as it was when CHKDSK started. Unfortunately, there's not an activity indicator light on it, so I can't be sure. Should I let it continue and hope that it finishes? Or should I stop it and try something else?

Let me know if you need any more information.

Keep it running, the last stages take the most time and could easily take several hours depending on the hard drives speed and size.

When Windows does Check Disk with the /R switch, it checks every cluster, and sector for Bad Sectors. If there is a section with a lot of Bad Sectors, Check Disk will stall. If it takes longer then overnight, then the drive should be replaced. If it takes several hours, the drive is beginning to show signs of failing and should be replaced soon. Never stop Check Disk in the middle unless you are planning to replace the drive as it may corrupt the drives data.
