ok... i own a house right next door to my own, and i have allowed my mother to live there under a true "rent-to-own" policy, being that im the landlord, and her son, and about 50 ft from each others house, i gave her an early christmas gift of road runner internet added to her cable, since my first idea didnt work which was to let her leech off of my dsl... which I PAY FOR as well as the cable internet she has, both are under my name, just 2 different house numbers. now for some reason when im outside on the screen deck, her weak wifi signal has a higher transfer rate than my strong wifi signal on my dsl. with all the file sharing, video chatting, internet tv i sometimes watch, its a pain to be disconnected from one network when i try to connect to the other network and vise versa. i was wondering if there was a way to connect to both at the same time and just have my computer feed off of which ever one it sees with a faster transfer rate on its own without having to disconnect from the first one.

now i have seen the forum where you had to close discussions because you deemed it to be a topic of illegality, however i only touch on this topic at this time because i accually own both service providers, and was wondering if you would consider helping me if there is a solution only because unlike most, who you have already stated just want to leech off the neighbors unsecured wifi, i am the owner of both plans. if you do not wish to post anything publically because it may give a solution to the leechers you referred to, feel free to use the email listed in the account i set up or to email me at ].... if you still for whatever reason deem this as another inappropriate post, then i will persue the issue with you no farther. i appologise for the length of this post and would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide. please steer away from the software called virtual wifi, seeing how it was abandoned, however any other software that claims to do what that did, i would be more than happy to try out and let you know if it works. thanks.

to anyone else stumbeling across this post, if you know of a garonteed to work solution, feel free to email me as well and i would let you know how your advice has helped me.

With all due respect to you, I am having a very difficult time with what I am reading here. I am not speaking about the wifi/ Internet, either.

All that I can tell you is to check with your local Internet providers as to their policy (and legalities) of sharing a wifi signal. There is no reason in the world that if you are truly just 50' feet away from the router that is broadcasting an 802.11g wifi signal, that you should encounter any Internet connectivity trouble whatsoever - and vice-versa. A 50' distance from a router today would be welcomed by many.

It is possible to connect to two wifi signals at once from what I have seen, but it serves no purpose. Your system limits the bandwidth as well as the number of concurrent connections that you may have to the Internet at any given time.

Go into the Network and sharing Center, delete all profiles, connect to the 2 wifi profiles that you wish and select "connect to a better signal if available". While staying in hotels recently, my system would switch between wifi signals constantly - and seamlessly. It takes but a few seconds, if that, and I never knew while it was happening.

Good Luck to you.

Regards. . .

in all theory that should do the trick, the problem i have with signals occurs when i am connected during poor weather conditions or when im connected to my router from inside my house and i take my laptop while on and connected across the lots and into the other house... sometimes it dropps my original signal and it would then have to be told to sync up with hers. thanks for the input

I would think that if you are using a normal b or g type router and wifi cards, you could easily speed the connection up by simply changing routers and wifi cards..go to the newer 108 (n) or even the latest 300 connection types. This isn't using both connections or piggybacking them, this simply makes better use of the wireless signals you do capture.

As far as legality issues check the link farther down. It has laws regarding unsecured wireless routers and access for every state. In most states the ONLY time it would be considered illegal is IF you were using the "free" connection in the commission of doing something illegal (like hacking) or perusing the routers owners files. I don't know why anyone would get upset or concerned about "stealing" wireless signals...as long as you are doing nothing illegal, and in most states, its considered OK...

There really aren't any federal laws per se.. laws pertaining to wireless are set on a state by state, and city to city basis. Check your local laws.. you may be surprised to find that most of these so called laws pertaining to the use of an unsecured wireless network are flimsy or non existent at best.

Anyway.. the link is below. It shows the laws for most states.. localities may be a different story, so again check your local laws.
