I strongly endorse multiple partitions, it makes it a lot easier to back stuff up. I normally have a boot partition that has just applications and O/S on it, the least amount of other stuff I can put there. I have a data partition that has my working directories, source files, word processing files, etc. Finally, I have a work partition where downloaded files, and temp directories are placed while I'm working. Of course, it's nice to have another disk or three for backups and archives, I use a pair of 120gig USB 2.0 disks for that purpose.
