I am setting it up on a mini ATX and the intel fan is in the way of the motherboard power cable - it will work, but the power cable is stretched over the CPU fan. With the fan unplugged (but the heatsink is still on) and the case open, the CPU temp is 39deg cel.

That is when it is sitting at the bios PC health screen.

The intel fan is also really annoyingly loud.

So, can i run it without the fan? If so, do I still need the heatsink on? Any ideas on mounting the heatsink without the fan?

If not, can anyone recommend a better fan that is lower profile and quieter?

I STRONGLY recommend against running the processor with no fan! When you put the case on, the temperature is going to shoot up significantly, especially in the tiny case with minimal ventilation. Also, the temperature will climb when the processor is under load, and with no decent cooling, it's probably going to go well over safe operating temperatures.

Thanks for the reply - I will take your advice. Any recoomendations on a P4 CPU fan that is low profile and quiet?

i would suggest a different approach.

noise shouldnt be a concern, you dont see people running out and buying the quietest blender they can get!

but what i would do is to clip them ****ed wires, and add some length to them by soldering in more wire.

(or they sell a neat little extension for that particular cable, but i always want to cut things up and solder on them...)

but yes, god yes, run that thing with some sort of cooler.
they even sell little ac units that have a small heat sink and hoses to a box on the desktop.
those are fairly quiet.

In my two Pentium-4 systems, the Intel cooling fan is very quiet, I don't know of a quieter solution for the P4, and the Intel retail cooler is a well designed HS. I think I'd just live with it, are you sure the noise isn't the P/S fan?

"Is a cpu fan neccassary", now thats a good one. Of course unless you want a melted processor, and a smoke emmitting motherboard.

FWIW, the Intel P4 has an excellent thermal management system, and it's pretty difficult to burn one up. Tom's Hardware did a test of the P3, P4, and two AMD processors. They removed the HS while the system was running. The two AMD's went up in smoke, one taking the MB with it. The P3 crashed, but did no hardware damage, replacing the HS and rebooting fixed it. The P4 continued to run, just started running much slower to keep the heat build-up within a safe level. I was quite impressed, and it's one reason that this system is a P4. I have an AMD system too, but it's got a good HS, and I make sure the fan is running.

so it would be safe to say that in order to get full speed out of this machine, he is going to have to keep the temp down?

i would put 2 fans on it, just to be sure, LOL
