I have had my iPod Classic 5th Gen Video 30 GB since 2006. I had kept the same battery up until 2012. Toward the end of that, I could only use my iPod if it was connected to power (USB or AC). That progressed into the battery simply dying out and not powering on even when plugged in to power (USB or AC), with the message "Please Wait...Very Low Battery" No series of button presses would work at that point.

Yesterday, I bought a new battery, ensured that it was installed correctly, and it didn't power on. I figured with a new battery, I will just need to let it charge for 12-16 hours for the initial charge. I have had no luck with getting it to power on still after the charge---as if the battery is not charging. The following is the result of my troubleshooting attempts.

  • Plugged into wall: Black Screen w/ Apple Logo (constant state).
  • Plugged into USB 2.0: "Please wait...Very Low Battery" (constant state).
  • Pressing Select + Menu (to reset): No response for any length of time pressed. (Tried while connected to USB and AC).
  • Pressing Select + Play (Boot in Disk-Mode): No response for any length of time pressed. (Tried while connected to USC and AC).
  • No PC recognition of device connected (because it is failing to power on).
It is my belief that there is so little charge being retained, that it is stuck in a pre-boot mode, and is too low on juice to even charge. It is as if installing a new battery had absolutely no effect, as the symptoms are identical to that of a dead battery. I confirmed the USB and AC cables are not damaged and in operating condition.

What else can I try? :frown: Is this more than a battery issue?

You have done everything I would try. Based on what you are seeing, I would suspect that it's not a battery issue at all.

The only way to know for sure, would be to test the batteries in another device.
