Hello,

I am running Windows XP service pack 2 I believe on my PC. I own a Iomega HDD 1tb that I use to store my files on. The external hd is NTFS but when I first got it, I reformatted it to FAT32 so that I could use it on my PS3. Recently I was trying to transfer some files to a laptop which runs Windows 7. That was when my HDD stopped working and would ask to be formatted to use. Although I could not use the HDD on any computers, I was still able to load it up on my PS3. Although I was able to load it up on the PS3, it was very slow and took a while to load up. So i checked this forum, used testdisk and got my HDD to work. But after a day or two, it started loading up very slow again and I've come to find out that there was a data error, cyclic redundancy or something like that. And I ran testdisk to take a look, and found out a great deal of files on my hd were unable to be accessed. When I tried to access it on testdisk, it says there are no files or the file is damaged. Is there anyway I can restore these files?

Ok so as of now, my computer won't open it anymore. It just says its a local k drive now. I did everything again with testdisk but it still wont work. I can see my files on testdisk but can't access it on the pc.

Base on what you have found so far, it sounds like the HDD has failed. Especially as you have lost access to the drive. If it's under warranty, have it serviced/replaced. If not, you can try removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting it directly to a PC. That will rule out an enclosure issue. It also makes testing easier. You can then test the HDD using the drive manufacturers disk tools.

The hard drive works on my PS3 and LED TV though.. so it couldn't have failed. I just can't get it work on the PC. It just says Local Disk (K:) and everytime I click on it, it says "The disk in drive K is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" And in TestDisk I can see all my files.

Is there anything I can try to do to fix this problem and get it work on my pc?

My comments are based on what you are diescribing "I was still able to load it up on my PS3. Although I was able to load it up on the PS3, it was very slow and took a while to load up."

WAS...is past tense. I took that to mean it didn't work any longer. Slowness is a sign of a hardware issue or corruption.

Also, if TestDisk can't read the entire drive, that would indicate there is HDD issue.

Is the entire drive still readable AND accessible on the PS3? If not, it is corrupted or faulty.

Infected, corrupted, or faulty.

Scan with your AV software and a malware tool (MalwareBytes for example).

If it's still under warranty, have it serviced or replaced. If not, you could remove the HDD from the enclosure. That will allow you to connect the drive internally to your PC and test using the HDD manufacturers disk tools. That will determine if the drive is physically faulty.
