Ok so I have this really weird problem. I cannot use the internet in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, World of Warcraft doesn't connect, Live Messenger doesn't sign in, Skype wont sign in. The only way I can use the internet except from connecting with a Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 is Mozilla Firefox. I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 2. I am using AVG Free, Zone Alarm free version and also CCleaner to try and fix the problem.

An answer to this problem would be much appriciated.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Here's my connections tab:

I tried set up a network in start-accessories-communications but that didn't get anywhere. I'm connecting wirelessly most of the time. This problem happens at home and college when connecting wirelessly. It also happens at my friends house when connecting through a wired connection.

when was the last time the internet worked on IE if it was not to long ago. you could try system restore see if that brings you back to normal. I can sit here and try to do diagnostics but sometimes it just easiest to try a system restore.

I run a program called windows steady state. yes it takes a while to boot up. but I know I can undo any change I did or happend after a simple restart

you could try to download the winsockfix.exe to see if this helps resolve your problom its worth a try located here

I was reading up on your issue people where having luck with system restore. so lets try this first

Internet connectivity can get corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings.

This can be fix by using the WinSock XP fix. ONLY WORKS ON XP (all service packs)

Pros: May save you hours of headaches; can fix tricky connection problems
Cons: Not actively supported or developed

It's been a while. I just decided to do something about it after World of Warcraft stopped working.

If nothing else works then I'll try a system restore. But I'll have to copy things to disc first so I don't lose anything. I tried looking in Google for solutions but found nothing. Where were you looking?

Just tried it, restarted and it did nothing but give me limited or no connectivity in my wireless connection for a few minutes.

Thanks for the replies and help :)

WinSock is VERY good, however that will not fix this problem.

Check your zone alarm allowed network settings and make sure your firewall is not denying requests from those applications........
This is definitly NOT a port issue, but a program permissions issue with your firewall. If Mozilla is working, port 80 is not blocked. Your traffic from IE,Goog Chrome,Firefox all use port 80. If it was blocked, Mozilla would not work either. Ive never used zone alarm personally, but there is an option in your settings. Ill mess around with zone alarm if you cannot find out where to locate program privlidges......

I checked ZoneAlarm and this wasn't the problem. Then after realising I wouldn't lose any of my files I decided to do a system restore. It seems to have fixed the porblem. Thanks for everyones help. However, with one problem fixed there another has appeared...

Before I did the system restore I realised Java was not working. So I checked to see it it was enabled in Firefox and indeed it was. I then uninstalled it, redownloaded it and attempted to reinstall it.

I then got this:

I think that was as a result of the problem I had with Internet Explorer, MSN, WoW etc. So I did the system restore and tried to install Java again. It got further, downloading the files and then I got this message:

So far, I haven't been able to fix it. But at least almost everything is working now. Now that I've done a system restore my computer is running faster.

Thanks for the replies :)

Good man im glad you finally have your internet up and running! Uninstall Java, reboot and attempt to reinstall it. Use Internet Explorer to download it not Mozilla. Download it strait from Sun Microsystems website.

Let me know how everything goes.

Well, although before I did the system restore I had Java uninstalled it seems that after checking it again some of it is installed.

I think it could have installed part of it and then I got the errors. Anyway, I tried to remove it again and got this:

Try using Revo Uninstaller to remove the programs.

Good Luck,

Thanks for the reply. After trying that I still get this message:

I've also noticed that some programs are asking me to give them a serial number again.

It also seems to no longer be just a Java problem, I tried installing Opera because someone recommended it to me and I thought I'd try it out and it wouldn't install. It seems it won't let me install or uninstall anything, presumably because of the errors I've been getting. Should I try system restore again, but to a different date?
