When you say "knock the internet off completely" do you mean not even the desktop PC can connect?

Can you ping the router from the wireless laptop when the desktop PC is connected?

Is the desktop PC set up with DHCP or does it have a static IP address? ipconfig /all on desktop and laptop + LAN config on the router would be nice to have.

Welcome to TSF,

Make sure that you have enough IP reserved in your router. IP conflict might also be causing it. You may try to release/renew the IP from your desktop computer.
Open a command a prompt and type ipconfig /release press enter, then another one, ipconfig /renew press enter.

In some cases that I have experienced updating the router's firmware to the latest also helps.
