Internet connection problem

1191 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  jordybear
Sometimes my computer loses its connection to the internet. The connection status box says it's connected and it has the IP address and all that stuff. The problem happens randomly (at least once a day) and goes away after a short period of time. I called my ISP and they were not able to fix the problem. I've also tried changing the cables and connecting my computer directly to the cable modem. I am using a Linksys WRT54G router and a Motorola SB5101 modem.

hmmm.....since you said that you connected your modem directly to your computer and the symptoms still exist, it could be the nic card. if you have an onboard nic right now, disable it and use/buy a spare nic. install it on your pc and the drivers for it and see if that gets rid of your problem.
There are a few more things I would like to add. My motherboard has dual ethernet ports (Vitesse VSC8201 Gigabit Phy and Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit PCI) and it is connected to the router with a CAT5e.

I will try using a spare NIC.
Hi

While you are looking at your NIC's, check to make sure they do not have power management turned on. Some NIC's will turn themselves off if not in use and can be a apin to get to turn back on.
I can't find my old NIC so is there anything else I could try? I disabled the power management and the problem still happens.
