[Computer is Asus G50Vt-X5 (Best Buy) with Vista64]


Purchased this laptop just last week and I've been having troubles trying to get the browser to stay functional. Sometimes it works but most of the time I have a lot of trouble getting it to stay working. I've called tech help once, and to be honest I'm pretty sure the guy who I was talking to didn't know even in the slightest what was wrong either. However, he suggested I do the factory re-install thing (spam F9 on loadup), I tried it knowing I wouldn't lose much of anything. Problem is still unsolved. As it stands now I can't get it to work at all, usually I could flip the Wireless switch off and wait 10~ seconds then it would work perfectly.

Opening Firefox I get this

HOWEVER, I can listen to net radio such as Chronix (http://205.188.215.225:8010). I don't get it.

I can connect to other computers on the network but I can't connect to the router itself to change settings.

edit: I'd also like to add this happens in both lan and wireless settings :|
edit2: Xfire (equivalent to msn) appears to work fine
edit3: Attempting to reset winsock did not fix the problem.
edit4: I can play World of Warcraft

Open up a command prompt (Start > run > cmd)
Type the following bolded commands and post the results for each affected machine.

ipconfig /all
ping www.google.com
ping 74.125.53.99

I found out on accident that I could visit a https site, but I could NOT view the same site that did not require a login area.

Amazing. Through the power of elimination (if you can call it that) I've determined that the Trend Micro antivirus that came with it was blocking all of these http sites. I disabled it and immediately it started working. Just to confirm it I restarted the computer. After it loaded I opened Firefox and bam it was blocked. Closed the AV software and it magically works again.

Does the Trend Micro Anti-virus have a firewall as well? Have you checked all the settings in Trend Micro's AV to make sure its not being blocked some how? You may want to go ahead and download "AVG 8.5 Free" great anti-virus and it's not a resource hog like some of the AV's out there. Just a suggestion. I would try and check the settings b/c you definitely want the AV running when your surfing the net.

I have seen this. Used to have several people use Trend Micro Internet Security. Trend did an update once that changed the default setting for the firewall from the standard used level to a home level that blocked almost everything. I am trying to remember what the setting what called, but you could right-click the tray icon and pause over an option called security level or firewall level or something. It will be set to home or some option and you have to change it to the setting right above it or something. I will try to remember what it was as we have moved to Kaspersky. Hope my vagueness makes sense.

I searched their site. OK... you right click and look for something about firewall... It will have direct connection selected. This is very restrictive firewall setting. You want to choose Home network. Once you do that the firewall becomes less restrivtive. Again, we saw an update change this setting once. Gave us a bit of trouble before we figured it out. Try that and see if that helps.
