Internet access blocked but can access secure sites

2675 Views 13 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Ried
Win XP Service Pack 2.

First symptom was that the desktop icon to go to IE resulted in "Cannot find server"

Started to open IE from the program list , until that no longer worked ( 2 days)
IE is getting online, I can ping sites and my anti virus updates etc but IE will not open any web sites - except secure ones

Hopefully the solution is in the log file to follow. Thanks !

oops posted two logs- sorry . great first post
Hello ssmyers102 and welcome to TSF,

If you are running HijackThis from a disc, please move HiJackThis to a more permanent location like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

To do this:
Click My Computer, then C:\
Right click in the right-hand panel.
In the menu that opens, click New>Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder.
Rename it"HJT".

Unfortunately, I'm not seeing anything in this log. Please do the following:

If you aren't using it already:

Download and install Firefox www.mozilla.org/products/firefox - Use this alternate browser.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Run Ewido:
*Click [Scanner]
*Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
*Click [OK] when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].

Once finished, click the [Save report] button
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Restart into Normal Mode and post the results here along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks- Since the computer will not get online ( or at least let me view web pages) I will have to use another computer ( and this one has a bad floppy drive so I can't save to any removable media) So I will try this tomorrow-on yet another computer thanks !
Ok, just burn those programs to a CD and bring it to this infected computer.
Well i am having trouble finding a computer that has a Read/write CD- my burner is in the computer that does not have internet access.
See what you can do to find a computer to use to get the programs. We need to use other tools/programs to see what may be going on here. With a bad floppy drive also, there's only so much we can do.

Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and copy and paste the following --one at a time--into the Run box and hit OK (go to Start->Run again for each one):

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
OK Here si what I did

Got Frefox, loaded it in, it did teh same thing IE did- background programs and my Firewall ( Freedom, provided by my DSL service) were online, connection log shows lots of connections- but no web pages could be opned by me- as you may recall I accidentally tried to open some secure pages and they could be opened by IE.

Anyways with Freedom shut down, I was able to use Firefox. Downloaded the Ewido and updated it- ran it once while hooked up to the internet, the remembered you said to use it in safe mode so I ran it again in safe mode

First time with Ewido

Have to say that Firefox is about 3X faster than IE as far as loading pages- I feel like I am getting the use of the DSl now.

I need to find out if the bad stuff is gone, but I have no interest to go back to IE at this point. Need to get Firefox to work with my firewall.

Looking forwardto your opinions of the log files now.
Hi,

msiexec.exe is, in normal circumstances, a legit Windows process. http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/msiexec/ Where did Norton show this as running from? if you can't find that info, go into Norton and allow msiexec.exe to run, then copy down exactly what Norton says.

While I appreciate the Ewido scan portion you posted, I need the info that states the infections found. If you still have that report, would you please post that portion here.

Your HijackThis log is clean, but we need to find out what happened to Internet Explorer and if your blocking msiexec.exe is what has disabled it. Did you uninstall it when you installed FireFox? You need Internet Explorer for certain sites, Microsoft Update for one.
Hello Reid

I see you are in Ohio , so am I.

I will try to find the log of infections, I thought I had posted it.

This isn't it ?

The IE thing mystifies me. Don't know where it went. I guess i will reinstall it and see if it works.

Thanks for hanging in there with me. :sayyes:

Yep, good ol' Ohio..love the lake effect snow up here.

Reinstalling I.E. may not be that simple. If you have difficutly, use your System Restore. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools and you'll find System Restore in the drop down list.

Restore to the point closest to before you lost I.E.

Post a new HijackThis log.
