Intel HD Graphics TDR error (Display has stopped responding..)

First, I would like to say that I am new to this site, so hello :)
I tried looking at other threads on this but none seemed to have my exact issue.

I recently bought an L655-S5156 Toshiba Satellite laptop that runs beautifully..until now.
I bought the laptop in early Feb 2011 and installed Sims 3 and all expansions. The first week I had no issues what so ever with display driver. Then after the first week, my game would randomly flicker black and crash the whole computer. Sometimes if I alt+tabbed it fast enough I could end the game before it locked up.
I've tried uninstalling the driver (which was latest update by Toshiba) in both safe and normal modes, rebooting and re-updating...no luck. I even tried Intel's generic one...still no luck. I turned V-sync on and disabled DEP as some people said that interfered with Sims 3. Again, nothing.
I am at a loss as I don't know what caused it to go from no errors at all to this every time. Sometimes it happens after an hour of gameplay, other times within the first few minutes.
I heard that a windows update K9 or something caused issues but I'm not sure if that's the case. All I know, as I said, was after the first week or so this started to occur.

New or newish games can be particularly punishing to a PC, especially to the graphics card, plus with so little space inside a laptop (compared to a tower PC for example) overheating can become a problem with game-play & this itself causes errors & crashes.

I've always maintained that a games-console is better suited for frequent game playing.
