I am having some difficulty figuring out how to install my video driver onto ubuntu. I am VERY new to ubuntu and linux in general...

I have a Nvidia Geforce 6200
Ubuntu version 8.04

So far what I have done is download the linux driver from the nvidia site. Its a bin file so when i double click it, it says i cannot run it. In the command line i typed in the line as instructed on the website and it says it cannot run it.
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run"

I know about the restricted drivers but heard that they're limited in some ways so i thought id try for another solution first...

If anyone has a solution plz be thorough in your explanation because im a big time noob learning linux and this is actually my first task im attempting.

thank you

when i use the sudo command before trying to execute the file, after asking for my root password, it tells me "sh: Can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run"

when i double click the file icon to try it that way i get - Could not open the file /home/tiberiuus/Desktop/…ux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run. gedit has not been able to detect the character coding. Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select the character coding from the menu and try again.

ok... i double clicked properties on the file icon and checked "allow file to run as program" in the permissions menu. then when i click the icon i chose run in terminal. now the installer begins but stops and tells me installer must be run as root. so maybe i need to figure out just how to log in as root i think. thats where i stand atm.

Have you tried using Synaptics Software Manager(or whats it called) and installing drivers from there? Search for nvidia and install the driver. I don't know if it will work for you but it worked for me perfectly.

Here is another way that you can go about getting your video card to work. Go to system > Admin > Restricted Driver Manager. This should ask you for your Admin password, Then it might download the drivers that you need, or it will allow you to see the drivers that are already on your computer. Either way it is the easiest way to get your video card to work.

Cheers!

thank you! i was at first avoiding using the restricted driver because it had really bad screen resolution, but i did just that and installed the driver then from some searching on the internet i discovered how to edit the xorg file to allow additional resolutions and refresh rates. all is well now.

thanks again
