Installing a 3rd HDD?

hello once again, this goes to show that even the mods and other Techies have Questions they need help with.

so yea. i have Windows XP Pro SP2 as my Main OS. my boot drive is a Maxtor 80GB ATA IDE HDD split into 2 40GB partitions one for WinXP and the other for FC3. i have a Maxtor 120GB SATA Slave drive i use for storage [i had to use it this way because FC3 i could not configure to recognize the SATA Drive on StartUp], i also have a Seagate 40GB HDD that is in a system that is dormant right now, and i would like to take advantage of the HDD and throw it on my system, i want to know is it as easy as installing a second HDD plug and play only using the Drive tools and such, i know i need to format and assign a drive letter, but could i install on the IDE Ribbon Cable as my main HDD and install it as Slave?

if not as simple as this then will i need to RAID? which my MoBo is an Intel D865PERL i know it supports RAID or is RAID only reserved for SATA Devices and cannot be done with IDE devices?

thanks much in advance

just plug it in to the eide cable and set the correct jumper position for it
Hello Norin:

Also by the sounds of things you have an abundance of good sixed IDE drives / dont overlook the value of an PCI slot IDE controller card (promise is a great manufacturer) they are cheap at newegg.com ($35.00 to $40.00) this would allow you to run atleast 2 more IDE drives and maybe as many as four more ?????

They can be a booger to get configured for a bootable drive (hopefully your just looking for slaves) they can however be made to config for a bootable drive config if you dont mind rolling up your sleeves and giving a little fight heheheh

Dai's suggestion will of course / fit your immediate needs !!!!!!

joe

When you do this check the primary drive jumper to see if it's set to master (then install as slave) or cable select (then jumper as CS and put it on middle connector-should be grey)

Cable Select with 80 conductor data cable:
mobo--blue-------grey (new drive)------black (boot drive)

Also go into BIOS setup and check the Primary IDE slave is set to AUTO.

Then go into windows and use Disk Manager to setup the new drive.
yea i am aware of all the BIOS and jumper settings, i was just sketchy about throwing in a 3rd HDD i was fairly sure i could do it but i wanted to be sure lol thanks again
